The Price of Ignorance
Knowledge and awareness, ignorance and carelessness are virtues and vices which define human existence, If not in totality, then at least to a very great extent. From our individual actions to the governmental decisions which impact billions of people across the nation, whatever we do is essentially governed by these traits of humanity. So it is that in all our actions we are always struggling with either our knowledge and ignorance or how to act rightly according to what we know of the world or even a particular situation. With the receding tide of COVID-19 a few months ago, such an ignorance took root and little did we know how it would cause the tide to rise once again and drown as many of us with it. However, in addition to this ignorance there are multiple factors at play as well.
The outbreak of COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdown we experienced earlier did not only deal a debilitating blow to our national economy but also choked our daily lives. Understandably, it was a necessity which could not be avoided, if any lives were to be saved and a semblance of our normal lives were to be salvaged from the situation for a near future. Even so, it should be acknowledged that the consequent poverty and unemployment, hunger and other COVID related complications kept adding to our frustration to the point where it had built up into an unbearable crescendo of a heedless rashness, a volatile bomb ready to explode at the slightest opportunity. Sadly, it really did explode into a fully informed ignorance.
Did we not know about the silent, almost imperceptible approach of this deadly virus? Did we not witness the death and ruin which followed in the wake of this scourge of humanity? Did we really not remember what would happen, if we stopped taking precautionary measures and following the COVID specific S.O.P? Of course we did! We knew it before and still do, that it is a disease which infect silently and leeches life out of its victims… painfully, with an agonizing slowness. Can any of us truly forget how it consumes oxygen from the infected person and drains him/her almost empty of their energies, hindering even their recuperative process? No, we certainly cannot!
Yet, when the time came to exercise caution and prudence, restraint and discipline in our daily lives, we miserably failed and could not help but choose a blissful ignorance over a painstakingly kept cautiousness. So now look around you how our understandably reactionary but foolishly unwise actions have practically invited COVID-19 back into our midst to wreak as much havoc as it can upon our barely recovered nation.
It is indeed the price we are paying for being knowledgeably ignorant of the delicate nature of our situation. Nevertheless, instead of proclaiming as loudly as we can that it is because of PEOPLE’s ignorance which has caused the return of this pandemic, let us own the fault together as a nation and equally bear the burden of our present predicament. For with varying degrees each of us are indeed responsible.
So, let us face it together as before, let us act responsibly to keep our save our nation from another crisis and play our part in this crucial fight against COVID-19.
Let us acknowledge that as we caused the return of the disease so can we act responsibly and vanquish it once and for all! InshaAllah!
